Character Name: Mako
Canon: The Legend of Korra, Post Book Two: Spirits
Character Appearance:

Character Age: 19
Pick A Number: First: 5. Alternate: 200.
Canon Setting:
The World:

The world of Avatar is mainly comprised the Four Nations of humans and the expansive, diverse hybrid species that make up the natural wildlife. An ostrich horse, elephant rhinoceros, scorpion bees, and even flying sky bisons are perfect examples of the fauna that are native to the world. There are exceptions, normal animals such as a bear or a cat exist; but are very rare.

All the nations have asiatic cultures with their own personal histories and mythologies. One thing they all have in common is that they all represent one of the four elements. The Air Nomads, which were nearly wiped out in genocide, are both peaceful and very spiritual. The Water tribe, which live at the North and South Pole, are more of a warrior nation and are the only nation to have separate geographical locations. The Earth Kingdom, which is the largest nation and very traditional, is very prideful and has the strength to back it up. The Fire Nation, which had attempted to wipe out the Air Nomads and start a war, is generally technologically advanced with a strong militaristic presence.

Bending:

Some humans are born with the innate ability to bend an element, or manipulate an element by specific motions associated with certain forms of martial arts. The element is specifically the one related to the nation they’re descended from.

Earthbenders have at least one parent from the Earth Kingdom and can make rocks, stones, or anything made from the earth move or change form based on how well they’re trained in the art. A typical earthbender relies on stable movements and endurance while waiting for the correct time to strike. They cannot create earth, only use what earth is available. Sub-schools of earthbending include sandbending and metalbending. Those particular sub-schools require additional training on top of traditional earthbending. It is said badgermoles taught the first earthbenders.

Firebenders are descended from the Fire Nation, they can create and control fire in various forms. A wall of fire, fireballs, heat control, fire breath, and even fire daggers are all possible for a skilled firebender. A typical firebender uses strong, fast movements and relentless attacks. They are fueled by intense ambition and a strong will, though firebenders can also draw from their rage and anger. The sun boosts a firebender’s power, but not nearly as much as Sozin’s comet does; though the comet only passes over every one-hundred year. A sub-school of firebending is lightning, or the cold-blooded fire, and it takes much control and a sense of inner peace to be successful. It is said the dragons taught the first firebenders.

Airbenders come from the Air Nomads, they can create and control air in many forms using circle and/or spiral movements. Enhanced speed, condensed air strikes, and air vortexes are some of the things a skilled airbender can accomplish. A typical airbender embraces peace and freedom, as well as spiritual enlightenment. It is said the skybisons taught the first airbenders.

Waterbenders come from either the Southern Water Tribe or Northern Water Tribe and can control water, though they can’t create it. A typical waterbender uses graceful and fluid styles that are both defensive and offensive. A water whip, liquid temperature control, and a water shield are some of the techniques a skilled waterbender can use. The moon boosts a waterbender’s powers, though they are at their strongest during a full moon. Sub-schools for waterbending include ice, bloodbending, and healing. Ice is taught alongside normal waterbending and is considered a basic skill. Bloodbending can be taught, but only executed during a full moon; though there are few exceptional benders that can do so at any time. Healing is a skill not all waterbenders have, but it is vital to the Water Tribe. It is said the first waterbenders learned their techniques from watching how the moon pushed and pulled the tides.

The only person capable of bending multiple elements is the Avatar.

The Avatar:

Ten thousand years ago, spirits and humans both lived in the physical world, though not harmoniously. Humans lived in cities on top of gigantic lionturtles and could be granted a single element from the lionturtle if they were to venture out to the Spirit Wilds were prejudiced spirits dwelled to defend themselves with.

One human who obtained the power of fire, Wan, wanted more of a balance between the hungry poor and well fed wealthy. He staged a heist to steal food from the wealthy Chu, who reigned over the city, and was the only one caught; purposely so the others could escape. Banished to the Spirit Wilds, Wan begged to keep the power of fire and the lionturtle granted it.

After surviving his first day in the Spirit Wilds, Wan became a friend to the spirits after showing something most humans never possessed, according to the spirits anyway, and that was compassion. With their help, Wan learned to control the power fire and learned to firebend from a dragon by following its movements.

Wanting to seek out other humans, Wan ventured out and came across two giant, joined spirits fighting. Raava and Vaatu. Vaatu’s desperate plea for release encouraged Wan to do so and he severed their connection. Tricking Wan allowed the Vaatu, spirit of chaos and darkness, to be freed from Raava, spirit of peace and light, letting him growing in power which waned Raava’s.

Wan pledged himself to help Raava stop Vaatu at Harmonic Convergence, an event that only happens every ten thousand years where the planets align, both spirit portals at the North and South Pole open, and Raava and Vaatu must fight to determine the fate of the world. With Raava, Wan was able to master all four elements that he received from the lionturtles he visited. At Harmonic Convergence, Wan fused with Raava permanently and together they imprisoned Vaatu indefinitely. Then Wan separated humans and spirits by sending spirits to live in the Spirit World while humans lived in the physical world. Swearing to keep the balance in the world and being the bridge to the Spirit World, Wan became the first Avatar.

When he died his spirit along with Raava’s went to be reincarnated in what would become the Avatar cycle. Fire (Fire Nation), Air (Air Nomads), Water (Water Tribe), Earth (Earth Kingdom). The Avatar is born into the next nation of that cycle after they die, Raava fusing with them right before birth.

The current Avatar is Korra from the Southern Water Tribe, and is closely tied to Mako.

Spirit World:

Where spirits have dwelled for the past ten thousand years, existing parallel to the physical world. Abstract and disorienting to most humans, the Spirit World can be affected by strong emotions and travel can almost be done by thought at times. Good, neutral, and evil spirits live here and even a few human spirits may wind up in the Spirit World, though that is rare.

Hundred Year War:

In the distant past (now close to 200 years ago) the Fire Nation boldly attempted to prevent the next Avatar from coming into power by wiping out the entire Air Nomad race. While they nearly succeeded in genocide the new Avatar; Avatar Aang, escaped their search when he was suspended inside an iceberg, kept alive in the Avatar State with his skybison, Appa. The Fire Nation went on to attack the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes in what came to be known as the Hundred Year War. During their rise to power, the Fire Nation colonized parts of the Earth Kingdom in an attempt to overtake the massive Nation. When Aang awoke 100 years later he and his companions; watebender Katara, Southern Water Tribe warrior Sokka, earthbender Toph, and firebender Zuko formed the first "Team Avatar" and sought to end the Fire Nation's tyranny and thus end the Great War. Once completed, Avatar Aang and Zuko; now Firelord and leader of the Fire Nation, transformed the Fire Nation colonies into a melting pot for all benders and non-benders to live together in harmony, creating the United Republic of Nations as a sovereign state for the colonies.

This would become Republic City.

Republic City:

In present day, the capital of the United Republic of Nations, is called Republic City and is the most populated city in the world. Seventy some years after the end of the Hundred Year War allowed a technological boom, and Republic City is at the very heart of it. It isn’t unlike the roaring 1920’s era Northern America experienced. Radios, newspapers, automobiles (called satomobiles), and electricity are on the cutting edge of commercial technology. Until recently, it was governed by a council of four, one representative from each nation.

The Red Monsoons, the Agni Kais, and the Triple Threats make up the bending triads that are the organized crime of the city and usually fight each other in turf wars. Stealing, extortion, and racketeering were all common in each gang’s territory.

Another important aspect was the sport of pro-bending, played only in the city’s arena. Two teams of three benders (Firebender, Earthbender, and Waterbender) face off with rules and regulations tailored to ensure player safety (usually). Using their respective elements, each team tries to knock the other off the arena for a victory. An example team would Mako, Korra, and Bolin who make the ‘Fire Ferrets’.

Republic City has faced other threats in the form the Equalist movement that was headed by Amon, a masked waterbender who could bloodbend without a full moon, and dedicated to abolishing the bending populace. Rallying an army of non-benders, including genius Hiroshi Sato (inventor of the satomobile and also created mechatanks, electric gloves, and biplanes for Amon), Amon was able to lay siege to the city and wage war. Only to be stopped by Avatar Korra, Mako, Bolin, and Asami Sato (daughter of Hiroshi), and the United Forces (Military of the United Republic of Nations).

Currently, Republic City is dealing with the recent changes to the world.

Recent Changes to the World:

Harmonic Convergence was due and the Avatar’s uncle, Unalaq, set out to release the imprisoned Vaatu to fuse with him to turn into a Dark Avatar. The Avatar, along with the rest of Team Avatar, managed to stop the Dark Avatar outside of Republic City. Afterwards, Avatar Korra left spirit portals open so humans and spirits could learn to coexist in the physical world.

Character History: Mako's history.
Character Personality: When we first get to see Mako in The Legend of Korra, what we see is a focused, collected, and athletic jerkface. All three of those traits really stay with him for the rest of the series. Especially the jerkface part. His focus comes from him being the one in charge of making sure both he and his brother, Bolin, have food to eat along with a roof over their head. The constant need for him to be the ‘big brother’ and look after his younger sibling has instilled a drive of ignoring any distractions between him and his goal, which is usually a necessity. That has since spread out to other aspects, such as where he keeps his eye on victory in his pro-bending matches, or when he later becomes a beat cop in Book Two: Spirits and doggedly follows a hunch to a trail of clues that every other officer chided him for. He experiences a great payoff in being promoted to a detective for his unshakable determination.

Collected is the other core trait in Mako. For Mako, this really came from losing his parents when he was eight and becoming the caretaker of his brother, younger by two years. A boisterous Bolin helped to keep his temper in check and a key factor in developing the mental fortitude to keep himself emotionally contained. Other times we see this come into play is when the Fire Ferret’s are facing the White Falls Wolfbats in the pro-bending finals and Korra wants to play dirty since the Wolfbats are, but Mako reminds her that the referees are looking for any foul to use against the ferrets; thus the only way to win is to play by the rules. When infiltrating Amon’s rally, Korra (again) wants to simply do a frontal assault to rescue Bolin from the Equalists; where Mako keeps his cool after seeing his brother and thinks of a plan to save Bolin without having to fight a small army of the chi blockers.

In relation to Mako’s collected ‘cool-under-fire’ attitude are the rare instances where he can’t keep his cool. When he confronts Korra about using Bolin simply to get back at him, Korra’s stubborn insistence that he likes her (which he does) pushes him over the line and he yells back; his temper matching hers when they slammed separate doors to the arena shut. A consistent trigger for this is his protectiveness of Korra, like when Amon bloodbent Korra, he unleashed a fierce flurry of fire. Another time is when he believed that Korra was kidnapped by chi blockers, he viciously threatened one of them with firebending as a form of interrogation. A tactic he similarly used on a Triple Threat Triad member in Book Two, only it was a knife made of fire held against their neck, though this was to find out just who kept sabotaging Asami’s shipments.

One of Mako’s flaws is his horrible method of handling relationships. He does develop feelings for Korra after they win their first match, but mentions nothing of it and instead stares off at Air Temple Island where she resides. After he meets Asami in a very unconventional way, he’s seen talking to Bolin about Korra and assumes that his brother was referring to the firebender’s possible pursuit of a relationship with and even contemplates going for Asami because she’s the more practical choice. All the while, Bolin meant himself pursuing Korra. When the Avatar surprised him by planting a kiss, Mako reciprocated and took the chance to physically express his desire for her. The ensuing fallout was the breaking of Bolin’s heart, who witnessed the whole thing, and Mako blames it on Korra (which is half true) and she reminds him that he kissed her back (the other half of the truth). There is some improvement in this area in Book Two when it’s Asami who suddenly kisses him (THIS STUFF JUST HAPPENS TO HIM.) and Mako doesn’t not reciprocate, instead he keeps his cool (That collectedness coming to his rescue) and goes to find who stole from her company. (Half of that focus and the other half just running away to clear his head)

But he’s still a jerk. As can be seen when Korra praises him after a pro-bending victory and he returns it with an inconsiderate “Oh, you’re still here?” Another instance is when Team Avatar arrives back from the Southern Water Tribe and Bolin asks Mako what he should after the other three decide their courses of action, to which Mako simply says "I don’t know, figure something out." in a very unconcerned tone. (Total jerk)

Mako can get ahead of himself, though it is fairly rare. It’s best seen when he ignores the chain of command and interrupts Chief Beifong’s interrogation, a huge no-no from a rookie beat cop, without any apology to showcase his evidence to a possible witness to a crime simply to prove that his trail of clues isn’t something to be dismissed.

There is also the brooding aspect of Mako that’s littered here and there throughout the show. One of the main things that brings out of Mako is talk of his parents, to which his only belonging of theirs is his father’s red scarf. To him it is so much more and his insistence on no one taking his scarf is absolute; usually met with a very hard glare. (The only exception to this so far has been Korra, whom he had no problems letting wear it as part of a disguise.) However, it is something he rarely brings up on his and only does so when someone asks. (Someone he would trust in telling, such as Korra or Asami)

This doesn’t mean Mako’s without his own dorkiness. (Bolin didn’t get all of it) One of his favorite things to do after getting a job as a police officer was running by his horrible one-liners by his girlfriend Korra. ("Looks like you guys should put more try in triad." Mako, no.)

Lastly, there is Mako’s greatest fault: love. Having been focused on surviving on the streets for so long, Mako prioritizes practicality over his own personal feelings and tends to make decisions that could be considered insensitive. Such as when Mako’s confiding to Bolin and mentions Asami being a ‘practical choice’ even though he admits liking Korra. But love itself is shown when Mako pursues Korra romantically when she has no funds to offer. Not even her status as the Avatar meant a thing to Mako when Korra lost her bending, he proclaimed his love for her regardless of what status she had. This came into a much larger focus at the end of Book Two when they mutually break up and he says “I’ll always love you.” Straight from the heart and something she told him in turn. One of the usual standards for Mako is his steadfastness to protect Korra, which is out of his love for her.

Character Powers: Firebending. By using his natural gift to manipulate the element of fire in almost any way he can imagine through the use of his chi and the right motions, martial arts and/or boxing, Mako proves a very formidable combatant in the realm of bending. Having delved deeper into the art, Mako has also learned the sub-school of firebending: Lightning. Called the ‘cold-blooded fire’, Mako is able to shoot lightning through his hands as well as redirect any form of electrical current in another direction by letting go through his body without harming himself.

It is likely that Mako can be just as skilled with the martial art used in firebending (Northern Shaolin Kung-Fu) while unarmed.

Aside from combat oriented abilities, Mako is also a detective at the end of Book Two and has shown a knack for picking up clues, trails, and connections that others have missed.

CHARACTER SAMPLES.
First Person POV:
One, two, three, four, five, six, and seven.

Third Person POV:
His fingers gripped one of the hanging handles on the trolley and Mako watched the still scenery of Republic City begin to move by as the wheels began to turn. It had been a regular day of being a detective and some of what he was assigned to solve was still in the back of his mind.

But that was disturbed when the woman sitting near him suddenly asked "Heading home?"

Giving the flattest of looks, Mako spared her a glance. The trolley was full of people that were heading home around this time of day, and he wasn't one for small talk with a complete stranger. His gaze fell back onto the window, but only for a moment.

"Hey. Aren't you Mako? You used to be a pro-bender and dated the Avatar, right?" It was the same woman, and she was still looking at him with a curious expression.

That news was all over the papers, and he was sure it had died down by now. Either way it was nothing he wanted to think about. Especially in regards to Korra, that was still a sore spot that he was nursing. True as it was that they're relationship wasn't working with what was going in their own lives, Mako had no intention of revisiting it for someone he didn't know.

Suddenly another man standing behind him answered "Yeah, that's him! Was a big Fire Ferret fan."

Shrugging his shoulders, Mako tried to focus back on the scenery. Pro-bending was behind him and while he enjoyed the sport, he was dedicated to his police work. Though he did notice a slight frown on the woman's face and that she was still looking at him.

When his stop came, he went to leave and noticed that she was stepping off the trolley also. He didn’t remark on it and was content to just walk along, but then

"Sorry if I was bugging you earlier."

It sounded sincere and he realized he probably came off as a bit of a jerk, but with the line of questions he didn’t feel too badly for it. "Don’t worry about it. I used to get that a lot." He gave a single wave and turned to go. "See you."

"Wait. I need to get to the Cultural Center, do you know where it is?"

Mako blinked, and was relieved that the question didn’t turn out to be more personal than the last.

"Yes, it’s down-" but he had to stop.

Suddenly, within one blink, he was no long in Republic City. And wouldn’t be, not until he fulfilled the contract he had just made with the Cosmic Demolition Crew.
